Decision
What counts as ranking in Google AI Mode, and which of its outcomes is worth chasing.
Evidence
Google's own page on AI features, set against 26 AI Mode answers to one buyer question that Zumi tracked for 19 days.
Action
Treat a link, a mention in the answer text, and a repeat appearance as separate targets, and judge AI Mode over a question set rather than one search.

Google AI Mode attached 25.7 source links to the average answer in a Zumi study of one buyer question. AI Overviews attached 12.4. With that many slots, one appearance says little about where a brand stands.

Most advice on AI Mode SEO treats ranking as one thing: get the page cited. The answers Zumi tracked show three separate outcomes. A site can be linked without being mentioned in the answer text, and it can be cited once and never again.

This guide sets out what Google says about AI Mode, then what each of the three outcomes looked like in practice.

Key takeaways

  • Google states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet (the short text preview under a result) in Google Search.
  • In the Zumi study, the most cited website was linked in 20 of 26 AI Mode answers but mentioned in the answer text in only 11. A link and a mention are different wins.
  • Of the 276 domains (distinct websites) AI Mode cited, 72% appeared in one answer only. Each day's sources overlapped with day one's by 15%.
  • AI Mode cited YouTube in 20 of 26 answers. Its median answer ran 993 words, against 338 for AI Overviews.
  • One citation in AI Mode says little. A brand's position shows in how often it returns across a set of questions over time.

What does Google say AI Mode needs?

The source is AI features and your website on Google Search Central, which covers AI Overviews and AI Mode together. It says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." The two stated conditions are that a page is indexed and can be shown with a snippet. Google adds that meeting them does not guarantee the page is served.

The page describes AI Mode as "particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed." It also says both surfaces may use "query fan-out," which means issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one response. That is why a page can be cited for a question it never targeted.

One line matters most for anyone already working on AI Overviews. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary." Standing on one surface does not describe the other.

The full list of what a site can and cannot set is in how to rank in AI Overviews, since the same Google page governs both.

What did Zumi measure?

Zumi asked one buyer question about choosing an AI search intelligence platform every day from 20 July to 7 August 2026, in the United States and India. The run collected 26 AI Mode answers, alongside answers from Gemini and AI Overviews, which the full citation study compares.

That is one question in one B2B category. The figures below describe how AI Mode behaved on it. They are a sample, and other categories may differ.

No. The study's most cited domain was linked in 20 of the 26 AI Mode answers. It was mentioned in the answer text, with links stripped out, in 11.

A link sits in the source list beside the answer, where a reader may never look. A mention puts the brand in the sentences the reader actually reads. AI Mode handed out links nearly twice as often as it put this domain in the prose.

AI Overviews showed a wider gap on the same domain: linked in 18 of 25 answers, mentioned in 7. AI Mode's longer answers leave more room for a mention, but the link still came far more easily.

How long does an AI Mode citation last?

Not long, for most sites. Across the 19 days, AI Mode cited 276 distinct domains, and 72% of them appeared in exactly one answer. When each day's cited domains were compared with day one's, the overlap was 15%.

The wide source list explains part of this. With 25.7 links per answer, AI Mode draws on twice as many sources per answer as AI Overviews, and 206 of its domains were cited by neither Gemini nor AI Overviews in the same study. Most of the sites that won a slot never won another.

For ranking, the consequence is direct. A page that appears in one AI Mode answer has shown that it can be cited. Whether it holds a position shows only in repeated answers.

What kinds of sources fill AI Mode's answers?

Long answers and many links leave room for formats that a short summary skips. AI Mode cited YouTube in 20 of 26 answers and Reddit in 5. Its median answer ran 993 words, nearly three times the 338 of AI Overviews.

Advice to publish video and take part in community discussion is common. In this study, video was close to a fixture of AI Mode answers, while community threads appeared in about one answer in five. Both figures come from one question, so they show what AI Mode drew on here rather than a rule for every category.

What follows for AI Mode SEO?

Three conclusions fit the evidence.

  • The stated requirements come first. A page that is not indexed, or cannot show a snippet, cannot appear among the links AI Mode cites. This is the only part with a clear pass or fail.
  • A mention is the harder and more valuable target. Links came nearly twice as easily as mentions in the answer text. Pages that state plainly what a brand does and who it serves give AI Mode a sentence it can reuse.
  • Coverage across related questions counts more than one page. Because AI Mode fans out into subtopics and rotates its sources, a brand that answers the related questions well has more chances to return.

Answer-first writing, original data, and credible third-party coverage all appear in published AI Mode advice. They are reasonable investments with no promised return, and none of them comes from Google as a ranking rule.

How should AI Mode ranking be tracked?

Because the outcome moves on its own, a single search says little. Tracking a brand in AI Overviews and AI Mode covers the setup: a fixed question set, a separate baseline for each surface, repeated runs, and mentions counted apart from links.

Google Search Console, the free reporting tool Google gives site owners, counts AI Mode inside its overall Web search totals, so it shows which pages earned traffic but not what the answer said about the brand.

Zumi, an AI Search Intelligence Platform, tracks Google AI Mode on its Enterprise plan as one of up to nine engines, with each engine reported on its own. Book a demo to see how a brand appears in AI Mode answers.
